An Early Sheraton/Federal Mahogany Tall Post Bed, Philadelphia, c.1790, Provenance: Joseph Kindig

This is a tall bed and makes an impressive statement, no doubt, for a large scale Philadelphia house.  Slightly taller than most of this type, it has earlier square tapered legs, and not the usual fluted kind that would mimic the top of the tall post.   Consequently, it is earlier, and leans closer toward a Chippendale form.  The carvings are beautifully done and this bed has been enlarged (to accommodate a queen sized mattress*) by Joseph Kindig, who was one of the major dealers and probably the major dealer in Philadelphia furniture.   Some of the finest colonial furniture passed through his hands.   Kindig originally sold this bed for $30,000 in 1989, the bill of sale for which can be seen below.

Basically, these beds are all about the posts, as headboard were generally simple.  This bed is in excellent, ready to use condition.
