A Fine Mahogany and Giltwood Federal/Hepplewhite Mirror, New England, or England, c.1790

DEACCESSIONED

This is a good-sized mirror that retains its original urn with wired wheat motif and original carved rosettes and leafage flanking the sides of the mirror.   The base has a beautifully conceived pattern and there appear to be no break-outs.  The mahogany has a warm rich feel and the inlay is perfection.   The gold leaf also is original (see detailed image below).

There is a closely related mirror on exhibit in the current Rhode Island School of Design Museum’s current show: “Made in America”.

The mirror and the backboard are old replacements, as is common.
