An Important Ebonized Cherry Renaissance Revival Armchair, New York, possibly Herter Brothers, c.1870

DEACCESSIONED

This impressive upholstered armchair with dramatic lion head arms is reputed to have been
used among White House furnishings in the late 19th century (and perhaps later). The
chair’s unnamed previous owner suggested that this was originally a part of the Red Room
furnishings during the Grant administration, and a brass plaque on the font seat real reads:
