This bed relies on its vase and ring-turned and reeded embellishments on all four posts on to make an opulent statement.  Most beds of this period have plain headboard posts, as this area was generally covered by drapery.   This bed was not meant to be used in that regard, and has a most magnificent figured mahogany backboard of one sumptuous board of full width…it was meant to be seen.    This headboard is a very rare feature, and we have only seen a few like this one, as most are made of simple, unadorned poplar.  This bed retains its original tester–which is often lost–and is set up for use with a box spring utilizing angle irons.   The posts are substantial, and the bulbous fluting is of the best quality typical of work coming out of the main Colonial cities at the time.
