A Magnificent Mahogany Tilt-topped Table with Blind Incised Work, England, c.1760

This table appears unassuming at first, but starting from the top, it has a wonderfully figured mahogany top with beautiful color composed of well-chosen stock, and is a showstopper. For an English piece, having a birdcage is quite rare, but there it is, and the spiral urn is quite restrained; yet deeply carved. Note the incised carving on the legs. This is rarely found and highly prized, from a collector’s point of view. The leg itself is wonderfully sculptured, with a strongly developed pad foot. Its form is perfection. It’s a heavy small table, as the wood is the finest dense Cuban mahogany, which now is long gone, as these were coastal trees that have long been stripped from their shores during the 18th and early 19th centuries.

This table is the best of its type and in perfect condition…note the original iron spider under the column bearing the original hand wrought nails.
