A Classical Burled Walnut Secretaire a Abattant, Boston, c.1820-25 with Hidden Drawer on Top

DEACCESSIONED

This was a remarkably untouched piece of furniture, which has been French polished and cleaned with its original leather writing surface. Boston models were fairly austere, and this one relies on its beautifully figured columns with gilt acanthus capitals, giving it a touch of Greek Classicism. The hidden drawer is actually the curved soffit above the desk lid. The interior has a beautiful figured back panel which appears to be mahogany and definitely original to the piece; it has an eye-pleasing comfortable countenance to it, to use as a desk. The interior drawers have beautifully figured crotch graining and the small pulls are original.

This is a wonderful abattant in superb condition, and makes a very rich statement.
