A Carved Mahogany Classical/Sheraton Sofa, New York, Phyfe or Contemporary, c.1810

DEACCESSIONED

The Devil is in the details and this is one of the finest classical sofas we’ve owned. Let’s start with the arm supports. Note where the skirt meets the leg. That block is carved…on most of these sofas it is left blank. Also, note the arm support; it is intricately developed, and not just a simple reeded support. Also, look at the crest of the sofa; note how the long reeds are scooped out (see detail). This little detail, of scooping out the reed, thereby refining its sculpture is often left undone. This sofa is undoubtedly one of high quality when made, and has been, no
doubt loved through the years, as its condition is superb. This sofa
has been reupholstered and is in good condition.
