This is a fine small classical console table which serves nicely in a hall or as a liquor/mixing table. The marble is original and this piece has been French polished, leaving the original surface of the carved acanthus molding and rosettes. Architecturally, this table makes a bold statement with its curvaceous legs and serpentine skirt throughout (sides included). This style had a short-lived period in America and the Phyfe workshop worked in this form at the later years of their business. (Two images provided below show related examples of this form held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.)
As this table is meant to be against a wall, its usefulness as a mixing table for liquor glasses, etc. is apparent. The small size with all its curves gives it a very compact and strong feeling while remaining quite open under its top.
