A Walnut Queen Anne Lowboy, Boston, c.1740

This is an interesting piece
because it’s the most highly developed form of the Boston walnut (herringbone
inlaid) type produced in the colonies. This lowboy is entirely mint with the
exception of a replaced top. The brasses are original, and the shell is superb.
Sometimes these shells are inlaid with a contrasting wood, and sometime fully
carved, as this one is. Aside from the top, this piece has had no repairs or
breaks whatsoever. It obviously had a very good life and the top must have
failed, so good housekeeping back then called for a new top. The top is solid
walnut added some time ago, with an appropriate edge.

Note the old family
notations on stickers in the back.

If this piece had its
original top, it would probably be ten times what we’re asking.  See Keno’s Jan 2013 sale.
