A Mahogany Classical Marble Topped Console/Serving Table, Boston, MA, 1815-20, Vose or contemporary of equal rank

DEACCESSIONED

Marble topped tables which retain their original tops are rare, and this table has such a top with a fine mellow surface and oxidation underneath, clearly showing its originality. The wood used throughout is beautifully figured and the Classical scrolls that define the feet are robustly carved. The entire construction of this piece, and its high quality are reminiscent of the work of a top shop in Boston, possibly Vose or a contemporary of equal rank. This serving table is very practical for serving drinks and is reminiscent of Colonial “mixing tables”. This is a rare piece, as few original marble top pieces have survived. It is museum quality, with no alterations or repairs.
