This secretary, with its kneehole desk, and large lid for writing, makes it a well thought-out secretary designed to be used. The columns and paw feet are well-carved with great attention to detail; see the scrollwork on top of the column. The most impressive feature of this secretary is the beautifully-glazed latticework of intersecting circles. Note the circles, one above another, in the center of the secretary, and the play on this with other circles.
As far as construction, note the beautifully paneled back, the back could have easily been accomplished with simple nailed boards, but these panels are all chamferrred into the framework. See dovetails, etc. This was certainly not a low-end model, and one of the best of its type. All of the brass is original, and the casework, i.e. veneers, et al, is in extremely fine condition, which has mellowed to a nice amber/mahogany color through the years.
