A Classical Ormulo-mounted Mahogany Box sofa, New York, c.1815, Phyfe or Contemporary of Equal Rank

DEACCESSIONED

This item was sold at auction by Neal Auction Company on January 26th, 2019.

This is one of the finest of the box sofa forms, with finely detailed ormulo mounts, at the ends of each sofa column. This sofa makes a very strong statement, and the beautifully carved acanthus feet above reeded melon bulbs on castors.
The mahogany is beautifully figured, and there are no repairs or alterations. This is a classic example of the best of New York work during the period of which the Phyfe school derives its fame and recognition.
