A Chippendale Mahogany Secretary Bureau, England, c.1780

DEACCESSIONED

This is a wonderfully constructed secretary/bureau, all composed of mahogany solids…it is very heavy. Each solid drawerfront exhibits the striking mahogany veining that this wood is famous for. Note the carved dental work of the cornice molding.

The feet as well, are all original and have a gadrooning over the knee. What’s extremely remarkable about this form is its functionality, with the large writing surface developed when two of the drawers are combined. Of special note is the beautifully carved prospect door.   This piece was obviously made for someone of high station. This piece is completely original including its bracket feet.
