Haskell was Constable of New Gloucester, Massachusetts, and served
in the Revolutionary army under General Wadsworth Co Prime’s Regiment in 1780.
Prior to that, in 1774 he and a dozen or more gentlemen organized the town
militia. His ancestors were “English of Jewish blood.” This portrait was in the
Boston Museum and was last lent by a Haskell after a Centennial was published of
New Gloucester, on September 7th, 1874.
This bust length oil portrait depicts an English gentleman with
blond hair and red cheeks facing to the right and wearing a ruffled collar and
reddish brown coat. This painting retains its original frame and gilt
surface.
