A Carved Mahogany Classical Sofa with Curule legs, Phyfe workshop, c.1810

This sofa has a beautifully
carved crest rail with a deep, dry old surface that
has been left alone for many years. The carving is
quintessential Phyfe, and the shape of the crest rail,
which strongly arches back, is a key trait. This type
of curule foot is extremely rare and interestingly,
gives the entire sofa a very springy and light lift.
This sofa is in a fine state of preservation.

Many sofas relate to this
form. Shown below are two Phyfe sofas illustrated
in Duncan Phyfe and the English Regency, which show
Phyfe’s use of this carved crest rail and curule feet.

We have newly reupholstered this sofa.
The entire upholstered foundation is rebuilt by Manfred
Woerner, an upholsterer used by museums in the area;
he is the best…and this sofa deserves it.
