A Federal Mahogany and Veneer Carved Tilt-top Candlestand, probably New England, c. 1825

DEACCESSIONED

This single elliptical top is of the solid and beautifully figured.  The column is quite unusual and departs from the urn or ball prototypes.  The acanthus carving and typical punchwork on the urn lead us to Salem.   It is rare to find these tables with fully carved legs, as are seen here.   All is composed of heavy, dense, Santo Domingo mahogany.  Note the image with the top lifted up.   The back is in perfect, untouched condition.  It is of a useful and functional mid size and all of solid mahogany.
