Pair of Brass and Marble-Mounted Carved Mahogany Open Armchairs, South China, second half 19th century

Scroll down for 4 more photos

Chinese chairs of this period are available; however, those of the quality we show are quite scarce. Note, these chairs retain their original finish, something which is very important to antiquarians.  Pairs are rare, and those with original marble insets even more so. Interestingly, we have never seen brass onlay, which makes a lot of sense on the foot rail.

Moreover, the design of the open woodwork in the back and arms (see detailed images below) is exceptional and highly artistic. These chairs were highly prized, and came out of an estate sale from their original owners. We are pleased to offer them.

Height: 37 1/2 in. Seat Height: 19 1/2 in. Width: 24 in. Depth: 17 in.
