A Carved Mahogany Classical Card Table, New York, c.1820

This card table represents
the height of the Empire period with fabulous carving
throughout. We have seen several drop-leaf tables
of this form, but this is the only card table we have
seen. The top-which is composed of dramatic mahogany
veneers which are crossbanded at the edge-is supported
by an apron with panels of vibrant mahogany flanking
a central carved rosette. All are supported on four
beautifully carved columns above a magnificently carved
pedestal with Phyfe style carved paw feet with acanthus
carving. The central pineapple adds a dynamic focal point.

This table is clearly
one of the best of its kind and, for a related drop
leaf table, see
item sw00894
. These pieces are the masterpieces
of the American empire period.
