A Classical Mahogany Bow-front Chest with Columns, Philadelphia, attributed to Anthony Quervelle, c.1830

DEACCESSIONED

Announcement!  This item will be available at auction from Neal Auction Company on January 26th, 2019.  Preview exhibition is currently underway.  Click here to see our listings at nealauction.com.

This is a full scale chest with magnificently figured mahogany. The bow front is quite dramatic, and is further enhanced by flanking stately columns with beautifully carved capitals. It is unusual, however, in having the lower drawer straight, as a base, supporting the columns above. It is the only one of this form we have seen. The cabinetry is absolutely first class (see details below) It retains its original wooden pulls. This piece came to us with a related bureau (sw01086); both are illustrated in Philadelphia Empire Furniture, Boor.
