A Mahogany Chippendale Two-tier Dumbwaiter, England, c.1800

DEACCESSIONED

Announcement!  This item will be available at auction from Neal Auction Company on January 26th, 2019.  Preview exhibition is currently underway.  Click here to see our listings at nealauction.com.

This is a most interesting
and different dumbwaiter that is indeed extremely
practical by having two large dishtop platforms instead
of the usual descending two or three tiers. Also,
each platform is supported not by a central column
but by three nicely turned outer columns, which interestingly
gives one a lot of serviceability. Further, each top
is beautifully “dishtopped” with a series
of turnings, giving each top a good sense of depth.
Each platform is composed of a solid single board
of amber mellowed figured mahogany.

This is a lovely
and serviceable dumbwaiter in superb condition. For
a related two-tier dumbwaiter of similar form, see
British Antique Furniture, John Andrews.
