A Dramatically Carved Hungmu China Export Davenport Desk, last quarter, 19th Century

This is a monumental desk
with phenomenal carving throughout. The backboard
is no longer a backboard but completely carved with
a beautiful silhouette of a family of five with the
patriarch in the center. The main drawer under the
lift-top lid is carved and every exposed surface is
fully embellished with two fabulously carved dragons
just below and supporting the writing surface as animated
columns. View the close-up details of the dragon with
wonderfully carved scales. All is supported on four
carved, ball and claw feet.

This davenport desk, unlike
the English form it is derived from, is substantially
larger and with drawers on both sides, which is typically
not the case. The top lifts to a developed interior
with drawers, and in addition to four carved side
drawers on each side, a smaller drawer appears above,
in addition to a slide out panel just above for a
candlestand. This is indeed a working desk that has
been treated kindly through the years, and retains
its original surface.

This Chinese casepiece
is indeed in a class by itself, and the finest of
its type. It is in original complete condition.
