Dear Mr
Weiss
Thank you for
your enquiry. I’m glad to hear that the ‘Lady holding up a butterfly hairpin’
has found a good home! She was indeed ours; we sold her a dozen years ago to a
New York collector. The painting is by a Cantonese artist, c.1850, perhaps from
the studio of Lamqua, the best-known of the Chinese ‘export’ artists, who
specialised in oil portraits. The frame is also an original Chinese ‘export’
piece – it may need a little attention.

Best
regards
