A Set of Six Carved Mahogany Chippendale Side Chairs, Philadelphia, c.1780

DEACCESSIONED

This set of chairs has fine highly decorative carving on its crest and splat. The crest is beautifully sculptured and quite English in form, reminiscent of many English models. The rear legs have a distinctive cant and they are all in a perfect state of preservation with no cracks or breaks. The color is a red/brown mahogany and has an old surface that has been waxed over the years.
While they are formal chairs, they have a less
formal aspect to them with straight legs and seat
with stretchers at the bottom of the legs for added
strength and stability. Decoratively, they are quite
flexible, even usable as a kitchen chair.
