A Pair of Carved Mahogany Classical Card Tables with Eagle Heads, New York, c.1830-40 attributed to Amariah T. Prouty

DEACCESSIONED

These rare card tables were assembled by us over a period of 15 years. While seemingly identical, there are slight differences, due to the fact that they are handmade, and no doubt, carved one at a time. However, the consistency between this small grouping of tables is readily apparent. For example, click here to see a related Pembroke table in our collection or click here to see the center table form.

Please note that these card tables have solid mahogany leaves of high quality and figure. Also note the rather high stance of the legs, which give these tables a very proud vertical thrust. Also, the elevated acanthus carving on the knees with boldly carved leg transitions beautifully to a smaller acanthus carving, which is actually part of the eagle head with profoundly accented popping eyes. These bigger than life tables make a fabulous statement together, and are at the high point of the Empire form.
