Gothic Classical Mahogany Worktable, c.1830-40

DEACCESSIONED

This
worktable has had a very protected life, as all of the mahogany is in
perfect condition and probably has its first surface, which we have
cleaned to reveal the vibrant mahogany and pulls.
For the form, it is fairly large and formidable with all of the
elements one expects to find in the three “drawer” variation.
The top lifts to reveal the classic lift up writing surface as well
as mirror.  The boxyness is
stylistically dealt with by the introduction of canted corners on all for
sides just below the robust square top.
The feet are classic gothic scrolls supporting the platform, which
is tapered inward toward the central support, which again reduces the
heaviness through design and form.  These
worktables were made of varying qualities, and this example is one of the
very best of the form, which becomes evident when compared to more mundane
box-like run of the mill production worktables.
