A Classical Mahogany Sofa with Eagles and Serpents, New York or Philadelphia, c.1810

This sofa has finely carved eagles which relate
to, we believe, small serpents at the ends of each crest rail (see detail below).
The crest rail and base rail are all tied together with a fine rope style
design, which finely terminates to a vanishing point at each end. The feet are robustly carved claw and ball
with wing elements (see detail below). The center of the base rail has an acanthus
carved motif. This sofa retains its
original black horsehair fabric.

This is one of the finest classical sofas in original, pristine
condition. It came to us out of a home
in Watch Hill, Rhode Island.
