This black polished slate clock/marble has the architecture of the late Victorian period with nicely cast metal fittings throughout that have tarnished through time. Many collectors like things left untouched, so we have deliberately have not tried to polish. This clock was one of quality given the french barrel movement it contains, which always cost more than an American movement, due the to refinement of the works. This clock has its matching garnitures, which is always nice.
The most notable aspect to us is the “Henry T. Brown / Providence” engraved mark on the dial. They were an earlier clock retailer, ultimately part of the Tilden-Thurber company, where our galleries are currently located. They were the equivalent of Shreve, Crump, and Low of Boston, or Tiffany & Co. of New York…every city had one at the time.
