A Victorian Variegated Marble Mantel Clock with Figural Mounts, c.1880-90

There are many of these clock types around in varying quality and condition.  This one was special to us when it came to us through an estate, because of the magnificent stone this clock is composed of…and to have the matching pair of garnitures is special.   The metal work, which is tarnished through the years is left as it is, as many people prefer the untouched surface, and the forming of all these parts are very fine, i.e. the banded column around midcase.  Also, something really nice about this clock is the porcelain dial.   Many times, these are cracked, but this is perfect.  Also (and far from least) this is a French worked clock, which generally is of a much higher quality of precision.   It’s called a “barrel” works, and the french were the masters of this form.
