This monumental secretary is composed of highly figured radiant mahogany worthy of the secretaries currently on exhibit in the Metropolitan museum Americana/Classical Wing, with traditional empire columns with carved capitals and acanthus carved paw feet. This drop front uses the newly designed “quadrant hardware” which offers greater stability and durability. This probably once lived in a grand New York townhouse…and would not look shabby in mayor Bloomberg’s New York Townhouse. It’s one of the best of its kind. Above the desk interior, an interesting central drawer is created, which is flanked by two complementary convex drawers, all of which visually provide a striking, no-nonsense secretary meant for a gentleman’s use.

A related secretary of this genre is illustrated in the Magazine Antiques, September 1977. In the example, attribution is suggested to the shop of Anthony Quervelle, Philadelphia. Note related convex drawers, columns, and upper case. The use of contrasting woods does not exist in that piece, which interestingly, is often at this time, a Philadelphia trait. Regardless, this is a high style, formal piece which would accommodate a large-scale room and make an important statement.

The condition of this secretary is immaculate and ready for show.
