A Pair of English Lyre Back Regency Side Chairs, c.1810

DEACCESSIONED

These chairs are related to chairs illustrated in English and American Furniture, by Cescinsky & Hunter pg. 271 and also to chairs on pg. 270 of which we have a set of six on display. While these beautiful and highly stylized side chairs are not exact mates to the Cescinsky reference, as is the above mentioned set of six, the stylistic characteristics of the lyre form and Sheraton leg speak for themselves.
The lyres are finely sculpted with scrolls and rosettes
with solid wood strings. The reeding on the stiles is characteristically
scooped out at the ends, typical of this form.

We also have an armchair that came
to us with this pair.
