This large scale secretary was probably made in Baltimore, and relates to the John Needles school. Needles worked in this period and used the stylized, turned feet exhibited here on this piece. Of interest is the more traditional Hepplewhite style of upper case with geometric door moldings, all of which is integrated into a more Classically styled lower case with its reeded columns. Although the pediment in the style may or may not have had finials on the plinths, these were never drilled and were designed without such as the height is truly monumental as it is. Of note are the beautiful ivory pulls on the many drawers in the desk’s interior and also, the cross hatched embellishment flanking the upper desk drawer (see detail). Also, this piece retains lovely period Classical brass pulls. This piece all original with no major repairs or alterations whatsoever.

This is a large grand Secretary that will grace any room with its grandeur and warmth. The mahogany has turned an amber red color and the figure in the wood is very pleasing, which only time can create.
