This table relates to a grouping of Portsmouth furniture as described in Brock Jobe’s seminal book on that subject. The form is very elegant, and this table is certainly a lady, with the first turning almost 6 inches off the ground, as if to say, “Don’t get my feet wet.” The devil is in the details and the refinement is of the nth degree. Note the inlay at the bottom of the apron and along the edge of the top both of which continue around the leg and along the side. Also, note the intricacy of the inlay band at the top with the lunette style pattern.
Flanking the central oval of flame birch with characteristic shrinkage crack are magnificent panels of crotch grain mahogany. It retains an older surface and is in magnificent condition, obviously loved through the years.
