A Commanding Chippendale Mahogany Block Front Desk, Boston, c.1780, Aldrich & Dorrance family Provenance

DEACCESSIONED

This is a desk with local history, having descended through the Rhode Island Dorrance/Aldrich family.  The Aldrich family is an old, celebrated one with a former senator, governor, and relation to the Rockefeller family.  Attached is a history written by Susan Moran in 1983.

All parts are original, except for the brasses, which have been replaced with hand-cast models from period molds.  The wood is a deep brown Cuban mahogany of heavy density.  This is a large desk with a stepped interior.  Its condition is superb and the quality of craftsmanship is of the highest standard, typical of these Boston block fronts which represent the most developed interpretation of the Chippendale desk.   It is a very heavy desk and makes a commanding presence.
