A Fine Diminutive Chippendale Mahogany Serpentine Bureau with Blind Fretwork Embellishment Flanking the Drawers, England, c.1780

DEACCESSIONED

This is a small, compact bureau of dense mahogany.  The beautifully worked serpentine drawerfronts are bracketed by blind fretwork, giving it a very rich look and adding another dimension to the composition of the chest.  The sides are the best in form and size, the quality of materials used is also of the best, with solid mahogany top, etc.  Often, these are veneered and found with much lighter boards.  Conditionwise, it retains its original bracket feet, which is a virtue many do not have, and makes a major difference among collectors.  Note the pictures underneath with the blocking, etc.  This is what they call a “clean piece”  that wasn’t moved around too much over its 250 years.
