Neoclassical Mahogany and Brass Inlaid Worktable, labeled “S. Carter, Cabinetmaker, Beekman St., New York” c.1830

This table is labeled twice by a stencil in each of the two main drawers. It is composed of highly figured mahogany embellished with a double brass line inlay around the top edge as well as the bottom of the casepeice proper and end panels. The central support column is fully carved including panels between its legs, which was done in only the finest pieces. The paw feet have a sculptural quality (see detail)

We note a worktable illustrated in the Magazine Antiques, Dec. ’74 (shown below). Interestingly, the dealer knows of only one other Carter example…in the White House. We have the above in addition to a fine dressing chest also with brass inlay, shown here.
