This fine worktable is composed of highly figured
mahogany.
The two front drawers are embellished with gilt stenciled edges. The top drawer is mounted sideways with a
lock. The corners of this case retain
all of their original gilt floral decorations, as do all other elements of this
piece. The center urn shaped column is
ebonised with gilt acanthus decoration.
Four classic saber legs support this worktable with New York style boxy
paw feet all of which are outlined in original gilt and acanthus.
This worktable is related to the type of
decoration seen on New York casepieces, i.e. some of which came from the famous
Meeks shop. One such sideboard in the Bayou Bend Collection is illustrated by
David Warren of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (shown below). Thwo related pieces with similar
embellishments are illustrated in Masterpieces of American Furniture from the
Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute, Tobin D’Abrosio (a dining table and/or a pier table from this source are shown below).
Generally chests such as these have had losses to
the gilt and floral decoration and this chest is truly a treasure as it is in
all superb, undisturbed condition.
