A Rare Highly Developed Classical Japanned Decorated Work Table, New York, c.1830

This exuberant two-drawer worktable retains its original black
lacquer surface with Chinese vista and painting not only on the two leaves but also on the side
beneath, which is only seen when the leaf is raised. The upper case is supported by four
fully carved cornucopias, a symbol of hospitality, all of which is supported by
four paw feet with acanthus carving. This table is clearly one of the best
extant and unquestionably, a masterpiece of the Empire worktable. The brasses
are also large and robust.
