This mirror was found at an historic local New England house sale, where it hung for decades.  The surface of the entire mirror is in untouched condition retaining all of its gilt, original mirror, untouched backboards, etc.  Walnut is a special material for these mirrors and the scalloped edging relates to a popular high style motif of its time.  (See the Chippendale secretary shown below, and note the shaping of the windows.)  Also below, please find a scan of three related mirrors from The Mirror Book, By Herbert Shiffer.  Note what Shiffer calls the “very unusual and fancy” incised floral decoration on the examples he cites below, which can also be found on our example.  The walnut retains a beautiful amber glow developed through the years.
