This table originally was the middle section of a large banquet table, of which the middle leaves were reshaped to make it a drop leaf table of substantial size. Ordinarily we would not handle a reconfigured piece. However, the legs are absolute works of art unquestionably John Goddard.

These sizable claw and ball feet seem to be placed on top of the balls and make the most dramatic appearance. The legs all retain their original surface which has been waxed, and the top of the table french polished.

Pieces by the great Newport makers exhibiting characteristic claw and ball feet are often 6-digit items.  The reshaping of the top makes it a very useful piece with what makes a great Newport piece still a great Newport piece intact: it’s all in the legs. Of course, the reshaped top is original.
