This stately chair has a very tall back, with beautifully sculpted splat that integrates nicely into the splat rail. The height of this chair gives it a commanding presence and its nicely sized seat is graciously inviting. Included below are images of one of a pair of english armchairs with a similar splat. One of the reasons for the possible Colchester attribution is that they often did out-of-the box stylistic interpretations of traditional forms.
The crest follows a traditional tombstone motif and the chair finials are beautifully turned. The front cross-strecther is delicately turned and the arms are nicely shaped into a downward scroll.
This chair has good weight, as it is cherry, and overlaid with a shellack surface. Its condition is excellent and fully tightened. Note the bottoms of the feet–which are usually very worn–are nicely extended, with a most minimal reduction…obviously, it led a good life.
