This bureau came to us
from a deceased collector’s estate. It was made at
the turn of the century, or thereabouts and is a perfect
replica-in both material and workmanship-of the original
famous Townsend-Goddard school bureaus that are in
the million dollar price range. The carving of the
shells is absolutely correct as are the proportions.
The drawers and construction are similar to a period
one, and what they lack is another hundred years in
the aging process. We don’t normally handle reproductions,
but this is a one-man benchmade example, of probably
the best American 18th century bureau. We can see
why this collector chose to live with this piece until
the end. It’s fabulous.
