A Pair of Classical Carved Mahogany Lyre Card Tables, Salem, c.1815

This is a pair of well-developed mahogany card tables exhibiting prolific carving throughout. Note the acanthus carved saber legs. They are robustly carved with the trademark Salem punchwork throughout. The lyre is also embellished with leaf carving, as is the plinth upon which it rests. The mahogany on this table is beautifully figured, and has a warm orange-brown glow.

Alone, any of these tables would be one of the more exuberant examples of the lyre form, and could make an important statement in its setting. Together, this pair is a magnificent find.
