We have never had a table with an outstanding presence such as this, showing the most beautiful figured maple. The top board, as well as the one below it is solid, and made of a very
rare “quilted” maple. Note the
zig-zagging of the figure. Again, we have never
had an example with such vibrant figure throughout! The apron is
tiger maple, as is the rest of the piece, which uses a thick veneer.
The quality of construction is exceptional, and although it
has a more country (or provincial) look due to the use of tiger maple (not
mahogany, which is traditional), it is constructed in the best of the city
style. We believe Philadelphia or its
environs are where it was produced, because of the shaping of the legs that we
have seen on other examples. The
platform upon which the lyre sits is convex, creating a lightness of form. It’s a showstopper in every regard, and the
best of the best of the Classical card table form.
