This small-scale sideboard
has fabulous paneled doors and drawers of crotch
mahogany that have developed a remarkable golden
brown patina over time. It is interesting to note
that while many of these sideboards are quite
deep, this one is very narrow, (20 1/2 in. in
the middle, which steps back on each of the ends
to 19 in.). This sideboard is a tour de force
of inlay work. Please note that the foot tapers
to within ½ an inch square, and is inlaid
with a beautiful panel of Bird’s eye maple
(see
detail). The top is banded at the edge along
the front and sides (see
detail) as is the front of the backsplash.
While this is a splashy sideboard with all bells
and whistles, it is also very practical in storage,
with bottle drawers and three middle drawers.
All this, and yet the countenance of the piece
is quite feminine and diminutive.
The surface is a very
early–if not original–one which is old and dry
and left alone over time. Note, the bottom of
the feet are darkened where a mop probably deposited
some wax, etc. and here we choose to not disturb
this piece as it is rare that we come across such
a clean, untouched piece.
