A Set of Four Highly Carved Chippendale Side Chairs, probably Irish, 18th Century

DEACCESSIONED

This is a very exuberantly carved set of chairs, the design of which relates, we feel, more to Irish furniture than English with the highly exuberant carving found throughout. These chairs have a beautiful stance and proportion, see profile image below. The chairs are composed of dense heavy mahogany and are fully embellished with carved knees, backsplat, etc.. The claw and ball feet are sharply sculpted and attractive.  We feel these are
18th century; the legs are fully mortised and tennoned
and the dense mahogany typical of first growth material,
commonly available at that time.

We acquired these seats,
which were upholstered in an old worn 18th century
fabric, which, although highly decorative, would require
reupholstery. The slip seat frames are later replacements.
