A Classical Figured Mahogany Bookcase Cabinet, Baltimore, Maryland, c.1830-1840

DEACCESSIONED

This is an important example of Baltimore
Classical furniture at its finest. It makes a profound
architectural statement with two highly figured cylinders
resting on reeded beehive feet indicative of Baltimore
and the work of Needles and others. The cylinder sides
open to reveal additional bookshelves, all of which
flanks diamond mullioned doors separated vertically
by a drawer. The swan neck pediment is quite interesting
as it related to other work in Baltimore, e.g. a sideboard
illustrated in Classical
Maryland
1815-1845, fig.164
. Also, the use
of columns is illustrated in Classical
America 1815-1845,

item 61
. Lastly, a sideboard attributed to Anthony
Quervelle,
see attached.

Finally, special
mention should be made of the finials, which are sand
casted and truly monumental. Also, please view the
details below. As you can see, the sides are fully
mortised into the base, indicative of the first rate
cabinetry throughout. This a great expression of Baltimore
cabinetwork and a treasure in any collection.
