A Rare Mahogany Classical Carved Worktable with Squared Acanthus Carved Baluster, Salem, c.1810

This is a very unusual work table with its magnificently carved central column. The only one we know of that is even remotely similiar is illustrated in Sack’s Fine Points of Furniture and also more distantly, American Antiques in the Israel Sack Collection, vol. V.

The thin top is composed of magnificent mahogany and is of the solid. The pulls are original, and this worktable has beautifully reeded legs with conforming casters. This is a very rare worktable, and the mahogany used throughout is of the best. While Sack felt the top was a bit light for the base, we think that’s a matter of opinion, as we feel it’s actually beautifully proportioned. It is in a fine state of preservation. The column and base retain their original surface.
