This Hepplewhite linen press of monumental proportion, is indeed the mother of all linen presses. Not only is it of large size, (both width and height), which give it the correct proportions, it is also a Tour de Force of the Hepplewhite style with a matrix of magnificent contrasting mahogany veneers accented by satinwood banding. Note the broken
arch pediment with the satinwood panel in the center
flanked by two satinwood plynths at either end, below
which is a lined decorative motif of rectangles within
a magnificent crotch mahogany panel (see
detail). The doors have beautiful matching ovals
accented with satinwood which is further edged with
ebony (see
detail). The sides of this case are highly figured
solid mahogany slabs (see below). Note, the break
between the upper and lower case is constructed and
framed with an angular banding of rosewood edged with
satinwood. The drawers are line inlaid and have very
unique and substantial brass pulls. This case rests
upon its original French feet with a magnificent inlay
which employs ivory.
