This is a fine example of the American Classical idiom by one of the
best known shops in Rhode Island. The New York school uses a single
column on each end of the card table, as in our Phyfe example, (see sw00490).
The mahogany has been French polished and is of the finest figure
throughout. The apron has its original gilt stenciling, which is often
lost, and the gilt is first.
This card table is of museum quality and is similar to the one in the Rhode Island School of Design,
(see catalog
entry below). An interesting observation is
the stretcher of ours, as compared to the RISD example. Theirs is plain
and ours is conical, with a defining central turning. This is an
outstanding card table, both historically and design-wise. Its condition
is superb.
