A Ladies’ Rosewood Writing Desk, New York, mid 19th Century

DEACCESSIONED

This compact desk was probably manufactured in New York by one of the fine woodworking shops of the time, i.e. J. & J.W. Meeks. This is revealed by the exceedingly fine craftsmanship evidenced throughout its construction such as the fretwork above the open gallery. The slide front writing surface opens to a full writing surface above a long drawer for storage, again, the dovetailing and tightness of construction speak for themselves. The reeded Sheraton style leg is screwed in, obviously to facilitate transportation.
